The discovery of the Beverly Hills watch followed an investigation into another watch theft that happened in Miami in April, when a man was robbed at gunpoint and his watch, a different Patek Philippe model worth $50,000, was stolen.

Detectives from the Miami Police Department said they identified 25-year-old Yeison Jose Bolivar as the man who committed the April robbery, and on Sept. 5 he and two other men were arrested.

Police said they found the Beverly Hills watch and a stolen rifle and a stolen handgun.

Bolivar made an initial appearance in court last week and was ordered held without bail. He’s expected to return to court later this month to enter pleas to the local charge of robbery with a firearm.

The revelation that the watch stolen in Beverly Hills surfaced in Miami was no surprise to Miami area private investigator David Bolton, who has unique expertise investigating similar thefts.

“I know that a lot of watches are stolen in New York and California and up here because you don’t want to be showing the product in the same location as you’re stealing it,” he said.

Bolton said thieves who work together to spot, steal, and sell valuable watches often work in loosely organized teams, that troll social media posts and photos for clues to the locations and owners of high-dollar items.

“Well, I think these are organized, disorganized groups. They are groups of people that they know that they can work with. They come together as needed to work together,” he said.

The Beverly Hills Patek Philippe, that Bolton said could be worth even more than $1 million, was snatched from the wrist of a British citizen who was dining at a cafe at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Aug. 7.

An affidavit filed in federal court by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security agent said two other men suspected of carrying out the robbery had been given photos that showed the exact watch they were dispatched to steal.

“These are the 2 watches we are looking for, they are valued at 1.3 million dollars,” the men were told, according to the court papers.

The men charged with the Beverly Hills robbery, Jamer Mauricio Sepulveda Salazar and Jesus Eduardo Padron Rojas, were caught by police in Riverside, California after their car was identified by officers in Beverly Hills.

During a search of a short-term rental home allegedly used by the men police said they also found a Glock handgun once owned by ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, who died after a killing spree in 2013.

LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said last month the gun was never one that was issued to Dorner by the Department, but it was still not clear how a gun once registered to Dorner ended up with the accused watch thieves.

Concrete divide: See how the same street looks different on Beverly Hills side vs. LA section https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/concrete-divide-see-how-the-same-street-looks-different-on-beverly-hills-side-vs-los-angeles-section/3501974/ 3501974 post 9854095 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/bev-hill-vs-la.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A new video shared widely on social media shines a light on a stark contrast between the city of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, calling into question the maintenance on one of the streets on the border between the two cities.

David Bernstein, a Realtor in Beverly Hills, recently recorded a TikTok video that shows the Los Angeles portion of Whitworth Drive with several cracks and patches of broken road while the Beverly Hills section appears newly paved.

“On the Beverly Hills side you can tell that they took care of the roads a lot better than the LA side,” Bernstein said. “Reading the comments a lot of people were saying, ‘Why don’t they just come together and finish the whole street?’”

There are several, notable differences between the two cities on frequently used roadways.

For one, off Whitworth Drive, Beverly Hills and LA have different street signs and street names as well as the different colors of the fire hydrants and even different types of trees towering above.

But for people like Bernstein, the street maintenance issue is the most concerning one.

“There’s a safety issue,” Bernstein said. “Someone with a high heel or a little kid, (if) they trip on the LA side or they land on both sides because there’s literally a dividing line, what happens in that situation?”

Though he has his concerns, he understands why it may not be so simple to just pave the whole street.

“Beverly Hills has a higher tax rate, it’s smaller, a little bit less than 6 square miles, so they have more money to put into the smaller geographical area to take care of the city,” Bernstein said. “LA’s so big. I don’t know how they determine what part of the taxes go where.”

Those who live on the LA side hope the city will use some of the tax dollars to finish paving the street.

“When I’m walking my dog I only walk on the Beverly side because I’ll trip if I want on the Pico side,” Aly Palacci said. “Also when people are skating they only skateboard on that side because if you skate on this side you’ll trip.

In response to the visible difference between the two jurisdictions, the city of Beverly Hills said in a statement that it’s working hard to maintain the roadways to prevent injury or possible car damage.

“We always inform our neighboring jurisdictions (of) our planned repair work and they will make the best decision based on their resources.”

The city of Los Angeles told NBC Los Angeles that it’s now working into the issue.

“The Department of Public Works has partnerships with some neighboring jurisdictions regarding street maintenance and will be reaching out to the City of Beverly Hills and other municipalities to explore partnerships on ways to address this issue, an official with the city of Los Angeles said.

Bernstein hopes some type of change can come from his TikTok Video now shared by more than 2,000 people.

“In this situation, maybe this video can bring something positive, and they can come together and make this an awesome place for everyone,” he said.

Beverly Hills considers free speech zones at city events https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-free-speech-zones/3495185/ 3495185 post 9830257 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/beverly-hills-city-hall-august-2024.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,172 The Beverly Hills City Council started a discussion this week about the possibility of free speech zones at events hosted by the city.

The free speech zone would be a specific area where people can express their ideas and opinions in events hosted by the city.

“We are a unique city. We have a lot of folks that will come here to demonstrate,” Deputy City Manager Keith Sterling said. “It’s really a balance for us, respecting the right to demonstrate and protest, which we cherish and value in Beverly Hills, but also recognizing folks that are attending those events have the right to enjoy those events without disruption.”

The council discussed the topic at a study session Tuesday where several councilmembers shared their thoughts.

“Going forward, I would feel more comfortable once we see what the parameters are, what the law is and what case law supports us and possibly doesn’t support us,” Councilmember Craig Corman said. “It’s all well and good if we like the program we adopt, but if it leads to litigation and ultimately losing litigation that doesn’t serve anybody any good.”

“I too believe that this is an area that we need to look at but I still think that we need a lot of work to get to a place where we’re going to feel comfortable with it,” Councilmember Sharona Nazarian said.

On the streets of Beverly Hills, people expressed opposing views. Dondi Cedillo supports a free speech zone.

“I think it’d be great to have a place where they can do free speech and if people want to hear they can, but I also think when people are putting on something they have a freedom to put on theirs without being intruded by other people,” Cedillo said.

Robby Mione opposes it.

“A free speech zone, that would be in Iran I think,” Mione said. “But here free speech, according to the Constitution, I read it a couple of times, the zone is called….what’s the name? Oh yeah. The United States.”

The city council has asked the City Attorney for more information on the legality of a potential zone, so if they decide to move forward they know they will have the law on their side.

Though the conversations are ongoing, potential punishment for violators may range from a citation to a misdemeanor.

The Beverly Hills City Council is expected to re-visit the topic in a few weeks.

High-speed chase in stolen Dodge Durango Hellcat follows Beverly Hills pharmacy burglary https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/chase-la-beverly-hills-pharmacy-burglary-watts/3487990/ 3487990 post 9803605 ANG/NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/beverly-hills-burglary-pharmacy-august-14-2024.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all At least one person suspected in a burglary at a Beverly Hills pharmacy was arrested early Wednesday following the crime and a pursuit in a high-performance SUV that ended about 15 miles away in southern Los Angeles County.

Officers responded at about 3 a.m. to a break-in at Pharmacy 90210 on Wilshire Boulevard after receiving a call from a witness. Up to four masked burglars in hoodies were seen leaving the pharmacy in a stolen white Dodge Durango Hellcat — a high-performance version of the SUV capable of a 4.7-second 0-to-60 run with it supercharged V8.

The driver failed to pull over, leading to a high-speed early morning chase.

“A brief vehicle pursuit ensued; however, the suspects managed to evade the responding officers,” Beverly Hills police said in a statement. ” Officers then requested aerial support to locate and track the suspects.”

The driver continued through downtown Los Angeles and communities to the south with an LAPD helicopter tracking the SUV, speeding on the 10 Freeway without lights on. The driver exited the freeway and entered downtown LA near LA Live before heading south.

The occupants abandoned the SUV near Wilmington Avenue in Watts and ran into a building. One burglar was taken into custody and the stolen SUV was impounded.

Officers surrounded the area where the other burglars were last seen.

Details about what was stolen from the pharmacy were not immediately available.

Former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner's gun used in million-dollar watch robbery https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/2-charged-in-alleged-armed-robbery-of-1-million-watch-in-beverly-hills/3487723/ 3487723 post 9802798 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/beverly-hills-robbery-81324.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Two South American nationals, allegedly part of a “crime tourism” group, were charged Tuesday for the armed robbery of a $1 million watch from a man sitting on the patio of a restaurant at a Beverly Hills hotel.

During a search of the crew’s Airbnb, officers also discovered a handgun registered to the notorious former Los Angeles Police Officer Christopher Dorner, known for committing a series of murders before dying in a standoff with police in 2013, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Jamer Mauricio Sepulveda Salazar, 21, of Columbia, is charged with one count of interference with commerce by robbery — known as a federal Hobbs Act crime — and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; and Jesus Eduardo Padron Rojas, 19, of Venezuela, is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery.

According to the complaint affidavit, on Aug. 7, the victim was sitting with his wife and two daughters on the patio of a restaurant at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel when one of the suspects allegedly approached and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at him.

The alleged gunman reportedly pulled back the slide of the handgun, chambering a round. While the first suspect held the victim at gunpoint, the second suspect allegedly approached and removed a silver Patek Philippe watch, which is estimated to be worth $1 million, from the victim’s wrist.

Both suspects then fled the scene and eventually entered a blue Toyota Corolla, with Sepulveda allegedly serving as the getaway driver, according to court papers.

On Saturday, law enforcement executed a search warrant at an Airbnb where the South American theft group had allegedly been staying. During the search, officers found a handgun in a bedroom that was registered to Dorner. Later that day, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Equinox and reportedly identified Sepulveda and Padron inside the vehicle.

The Equinox was allegedly linked to another armed robbery in Beverly Hills on Aug. 5, during which a $30,000 Rolex was stolen, prosecutors said.

If convicted on all counts, Sepulveda faces a sentence of up to life in federal prison, while Padron faces up to 20 years, prosecutors noted.

It was not immediately known where the suspects may have gotten Dorner’s gun.

Boxer Ryan Garcia charged in vandalism at Waldorf Astoria hotel in Beverly Hills https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/boxer-ryan-garcia-vandalism-damage-waldorf-astoria-beverly-hills-hotel/3463015/ 3463015 post 9603804 Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/GettyImages-2148069004.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Southern California boxer Ryan Garcia was charged Thursday in connection with vandalism at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.

Garcia, 25, was charged with one misdemeanor count of vandalism amounting to $400 or more in damage or destruction of property for allegedly damaging a guest room June 8 when he was staying at the hotel. The guest room and a hallway were damaged, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Garcia, of Victorville, is expected to appear in court Aug. 7. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney. He faces up to one year in county jail, if convicted as charged.

“While we are grateful no injuries were reported in this incident, reckless behavior that damages property shows a blatant and unacceptable disregard for the safety and peace of our community,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Gascón said. “Our office will work to ensure the responsible individual is held accountable.”

The 15-time national amateur champion was hospitalized after his arrest after complaining of a medical issue.

“I feel like I’m Ryan Spears. Aka Britney Spears,” Garcia posted on X the morning after his arrest. “This sucks 🙁 I never hurt anyone. I’ve only ever loved everyone prayed for people. And try to make a change in this cruel world. I love you Christ Jesus Amen.”

About one month after the hotel vandalism arrest, the former World Boxing Council interim lightweight champ, was expelled by the WBC after he used racial slurs against Black people and disparaged Muslims in comments livestreamed on social media.

Garcia posted a response on X.

“I was trolling I want all the killing to stop,” Garcia wrote. “I love everyone sorry if I offended you.”

Garcia is 24-1-1 with 20 knockouts. His last bout was April 20 against Devin Haney. The New York State Athletic Commission ruled that his victory would be considered a no-contest after he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

He was the World Boxing Council interim lightweight champion from Jan. 2-May 24, 2021, winning the title when he stopped Luke Campbell in the seventh round. He was stripped of the title after withdrawing from a planned title defense against former World Boxing Association super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna in order to “manage his health and well being.”

Garcia suffered his only defeat in February 2023, losing by TKO to WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.

“Ryan regrets his recent behavior at the Waldorf Astoria and the property damage he caused. He has apologized to hotel personnel and reimbursed them for any damage caused.  The past several months have been difficult for Ryan and he understands he has reached a crossroads in both his personal life and career. Going forward, he knows the focus must be on his well-being and mental health issues which have been strained.   There is no alternative.  He apologizes to anyone he has offended with his behavior and words and hopes the investment in his own well-being will demonstrate the sincerity of his apology. With regard to the pending misdemeanor criminal matter, we expect to reach a resolution that recognizes his immediate reimbursement, his personal issues and lack of past criminal history. Ryan appreciates the love and support that he has received and hopes to remain in your prayers,” wrote Michael A. Goldstein, attorney for Ryan Garcia.

Car chase suspect leads police on pursuit with his 2-month-old baby in the car https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/socal-police-chases/police-chase-vehicle-in-south-los-angeles-2/3462404/ 3462404 post 9703279 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/baby-chase2-e1721313938126.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,163 A man who police say was connected to a robbery in Beverly Hills led authorities on a dangerous pursuit with his 2-month-old daughter in the car on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said the disturbing ordeal began with a call of an armed robbery involving three men in Beverly Hills. Those men were seen traveling in Hawthorne and then ditched the car they were traveling in. Two men were detained and a third suspect was seen driving away in a Kia sedan.

That third suspect, who is believed to have carjacked the Kia, then instigated a pursuit with his infant daughter and the baby’s mother in the vehicle. It is unclear when the two entered the car.

Ignoring police’s orders to pull over, the driver, who was later identified as 21-year-old Daiyaan Henderson, swerved through traffic, at times traveling on the wrong side of the road, and had close calls with other motorists. Henderson later encountered a dead end in Culver City on Shedd Terrace and Wrightcrest Drive, where several police cruisers blocked the suspect vehicle in.

While blocked in, Henderson surrendered to police and held up his young daughters to officers. The man’s girlfriend, who was seated in the backseat, then exited the vehicle and also surrendered to police.

“When a baby’s involved, it escalates everything and you have to be on top of your game, and I feel like everyone was at the top,” said sheriff’s deputy Tony Lomedico.

Video from NewsChopper 4 captured the driver surrendering to police and the woman being detained. The baby was handed over to law enforcement and was medically treated at the scene.

“My concern was the baby,” said sheriff’s deputy Adriana Martinez. “She was crying so I just wanted to comfort her. My motherly insects kicked in and I was just trying to soothe her, stop her from crying. We ended up taking care of her.”

LASD said deputies fed the child and changed her diaper before she fell asleep. She was described as being OK and has since reunited with her mother.

Officials said they released the baby’s mother from custody after determining she was the victim of a kidnapping in the incident.

Henderson faces charges including kidnapping, carjacking, armed robbery and ex-felon in possession of a firearm. LASD said he was livestreaming the car chase as he was driving.

4 teens, 23-year-old arrested in Rolex armed robbery in Beverly Hills https://www.nbclosangeles.com/local-2/five-arrested-rolex-armed-robbery-beverly-hills/3443500/ 3443500 post 9641159 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/armed-robery-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Beverly Hills Police made five arrests after a brazen armed robbery last week, where suspects got away with a victim’s Rolex which was later recovered after the arrests.

The armed robbery took place at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday outside several businesses on the 8600 block of Wilshire Boulevard.

Cell phone video shared widely on Instagram shows one person grabbing the man’s Rolex, while another man pointed a gun at the owner of the watch.

A city employee witnessed the crime and alerted police. Beverly Hills PD then attempted to pull the suspect’s car over which started a brief chase that ended in Hollywood.

Police arrested a 16-year-old, a 17-year-old, two 18-year-olds, and a 23-year-old. They are facing charges ranging from Robbery to Assault with a Firearm.

Police said they received help from security cameras and their Real-Time Watch Center, as well as from LAPD’s Hollywood Division.

Deep Sethi, the owner of Bombay Palace on Wilshire Boulevard, said he was not surprised by the robbery and recalled recently witnessing another theft on Rodeo Drive.

“FedEx guy is bringing the package out and two guys come in and just take the packages away, in front of everybody, around 3 o’clock in the afternoon,” said Sethi.

The restaurant owner said he believes criminals have become emboldened because laws are too lenient.

“This has become the new normal and it’s a pity that this beautiful great state of California, especially Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, has been ruined and the politicians seem to be thinking it’s a new normal,” Sethi said. “Across the street, we own the other business which is we’ve made it into a membership only because we don’t want people to come in as we had a huge robbery last year.”

What to Know

  • 2024 Rodeo Drive Concours D’Elegance
  • Sunday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; be at the main stage around noon for the awards ceremony
  • The free event will take place along Rodeo Drive; around 100 “rare and iconic vehicles” will be on view

Rolling into a 30th anniversary is a major deal, especially when you’ve brought the jaw-dropping delight, and all-out dazzlement, with each passing year.

The Rodeo Drive Concours D’Elegance hasn’t yet revved into its big 30th, but it is nearly there: The free event, which is synonymous with Father’s Day among Southern California car lovers, is marking its 29th outing in 2024.

As with past celebrations, you won’t need to make a reservation: Simply swing by the Golden Triangle starting at 10 a.m. on June 16 and soak in the showy splendor.

And we do mean “showy”: The 100 or so vehicles that will take part are described as both “rare and iconic,” lofty but apt descriptions that are backed up by the beautiful vehicles on display.

Consider that the 2024 celebration will feature a Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix exhibition, as well as 13 cars from O’Gara Beverly Hills, the event’s sponsors. Those sublime vehicles include an Aston Martin Vantage as well as a McLaren Artura Spider.

Other local auto powerhouses, including Auto Vault Storage and Lucid Motors, will be at the six-hour gathering.

A Netflix area devoted to the July 3 launch of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” will also pop up at the Father’s Day festivity, with an opportunity to pose with a blue 1970 Chevy Nova (you’ll leave with a Father’s Day card that features Harold Faltermeyer’s famous “Beverly Hills Cop” theme).

It isn’t all about the looking/admiring scene; a dozen awards, including “Most Elegant,” will be presented to several car owners; head to the main stage around noon to applaud the winners.

The beneficiaries of the event include the Beverly Hills Police Officers Association and Beverly Hills Firefighters’ Association, which both aid first responders and their families.

Ryan Garcia hospitalized following arrest at Beverly Hills hotel https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/new-details-ryan-garcia-arrest-beverly-hills/3432368/ 3432368 post 9603804 Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/GettyImages-2148069004.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200

New details have emerged surrounding the arrest of champion boxer Ryan Garcia, who was hospitalized after he was detained during his stay at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills hotel.

Garcia, 25, was arrested Saturday evening after he allegedly vandalized the hotel while staying there as a guest, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department. Officers were called to the hotel for a call of an intoxicated person and identified that individual as Garcia.

The champion boxer is accused of causing damage to a guest room and a hallway of the hotel. The cost and extent of the alleged damage was not disclosed.

Following his arrest, Garcia was taken to a local hospital for “medical care.” That care was not disclosed, but the athlete referenced his hospitalization in a couple of posts on X.

In his posts, Garcia said he was “worried” and was at a “weird hospital.” He also compared himself to pop star Britney Spears, who faced adversity over her mental wellness.

In a statement to NBC4, Garcia’s attorney, Darin Chavez, said the boxer’s arrest comes as he deals with the “devastating news regarding his mother’s health.”

“First and foremost, we urge everyone to respect Ryan’s privacy during this difficult period,” Chavez said. “Ryan has been open about his struggles with mental health over the years and at this time he is dealing with an immense emotional burden. The support and understanding from fans and the public are crucial as he navigates these personal challenges.”

“We are working diligently to provide Ryan with the resources he needs. Our team is committed to ensuring that he receives the appropriate help and care to address both his immediate and long-term well-being.”

Garcia is now facing a felony vandalism charge.

Beverly Hills Whole Foods worker tests positive for Hepatitis A https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-whole-foods-worker-tests-positive-for-hepatitis-a/3415349/ 3415349 post 3461512 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/hepatitis-A-foto.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Los Angeles County health officials said Friday they are investigating a report of a hepatitis A infection in a Beverly Hills grocery store worker.

According to the county Department of Public Health, the patient works at a Whole Foods Market at 239 N. Crescent Drive. Health officials recommended that anyone who purchased products from the store’s seafood counter between April 20 and Monday get a hepatitis vaccination if they are not already otherwise immune.

No additional cases beyond the worker have been identified, health officials said.

“Receiving vaccination as soon as possible after exposure could help reduce the risk of developing hepatitis A infection,” according to a statement from the department. “Residents should contact their local pharmacy or medical provider for the vaccine. Public Health is working with the company to ensure employees that are not immune are referred for vaccination.”

On Monday, health officials said they were investigating an outbreak of five hepatitis A infections identified among the homeless since mid-March. No specifics were provided on where those patients were identified, but health officials insisted the “current risk to the public is low.”

The hepatitis A virus is found in blood and stool of people who are infected, and homeless people tend to be at higher risk because they often have limited access to handwashing and toilet facilities, according to the Department of Public Health.

“Public Health is offering free hepatitis A vaccines to people experiencing homelessness in encampments and at interim housing sites where there is risk of potential exposure,” according to a statement from the department. “Hepatitis A vaccine is typically a two-dose vaccine series that is safe and highly effective in preventing infection. Additionally, previously unvaccinated people can receive hepatitis A vaccine soon after exposure to protect against developing the infection.”

Health officials were also working with healthcare providers to ensure they are vigilant for possible new cases, and with organizations that provide services to the homeless.

Although risk to the public is low, health officials urged residents to check if they are vaccinated against hepatitis A, and contact a medical provider to determine if they should be. Residents were also urged to wash their hands with soap and water before eating, when preparing food and after using the bathroom.

“Symptoms of hepatitis include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dark urine, or yellow eyes/skin,” health officials said.

Beverly Hills middle school investigating after teens allegedly shared AI-generated nude photos https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-middle-school-student-uses-ai-nude-images-of-classmates/3348761/ 3348761 post 9330126 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/02/beverly-crest-e1709044949565.png?fit=300,168&quality=85&strip=all Beverly Vista Middle School in Beverly Hills is investigating some students who the school say created nude images of classmates using artificial intelligence and later passed around among students.

School officials said school administrators were alerted about the nude photos last week. The images included the faces of some students and were superimposed onto AI-generated nude bodies, according to the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

“It is very scary people can’t feel safe to come to school,” one student who did not want to be identified said. “They are scared people will show off explicit photos of them.”

Officials with the Beverly Hills Unified School District said they were “appalled” by the misuse of AI in a statement.

“We will be looking at the appropriate discipline so that students understand there are consequences and accountability for their actions,” said Dr. Michael Bregy, Superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

While lawmakers at the state and federal levels were said to be seeking ways to determine how to address cases involving artificial intelligence, Bregy said school districts need more support from legislators.

“School Districts aren’t known for having to advocate with congressman to get the laws to change,” said Bregy. “The safety of laws is clearly being outpaced by the technology we have.”

Some parents also said they hope Beverly Vista Middle School will take swift action.

“It needs to be some kind of huge consequence for that,” said one parent.

Those students who were targeted by the fake AI images were being provided with counseling, according to the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

It’s not the first time school communities had have had deal with these issues. Last year, school officials in New Jersey investigated fake nude photos of minors at a New Jersey high school.

‘Eating away at me': Boyfriend of LA woman detained in Russia speaks up https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/eating-away-at-me-boyfriend-of-la-woman-detained-in-russia-speaks-up/3345397/ 3345397 post 9319585 Courtesy of Family https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/02/Ksenia-Karelina-pic.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Police said an emerald-encrusted Patek Philippe watch worth at least $1 million, stolen at gunpoint from a tourist in Beverly Hills, was found after the arrests of three men in Miami, Florida accused of being involved in organized thefts of luxury goods across the U.S.

‘Follow Your Heart' to a new Rodeo Drive art installation https://www.nbclosangeles.com/the-scene/follow-your-heart-to-a-new-rodeo-drive-art-installation/3337850/ 3337850 post 9297202 Mr. Brainwash Production https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/02/Installation-view-of-Mr-Brainwash-Follow-Your-Heart-on-Rodeo-Drive-photo-by-Mr-Brainwash-Studio-courtesy-of-Mr-Brainwash-Production-5.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • “Follow Your Heart,” an art installation by Mr. Brainwash, is on view along Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills
  • Find the oversized balloon sculptures on display through June 12, 2024
  • Free to see

Rodeo Drive, let it be widely and most ardently acknowledged, has plenty of charisma, or “rizz,” if you prefer to tap into the nomenclature of the day.

But we’ll go with straight-up Rodeo razzmatazz, a quality that the tony thoroughfare comes by quite naturally. There is, in fact, always something to admire, gape at, feel quite agog over, or simply savor: The world-famous drive just goes the dazzling distance in all of the ways.

That decades-old ability to dazzle visitors was recently upped thanks to several shiny and oversized balloon sculptures, the creations of Thierry Guetta, the acclaimed street artist who goes by the catchy handle Mr Brainwash.

“Follow Your Heart” is the name of the uplifting installation, which will be on view through June 12, 2024.

The balloon-like hearts are found along three blocks of the celebrated drive, which is located in Beverly Hills, and are free to see.

The playful pieces are hard to miss; some of the hearts, which are made of stainless steel, fiberglass, and the sort of paint used on cars, stand at nine feet tall.

“Each installation, represented by a different unique heart, shows our bond. Regardless of identity or location, the message is clear — a heart is a heart. The heart is love and you have to follow your heart,” says Mr Brainwash.

“It’s the good in all of us. One heart, one love.”

Fans of the artist will remember the large origami sculptures that were on display in the Golden Triangle in 2023; the installation, “Imagiro,” was a favorite of people strolling along Rodeo Drive.

“Mr. Brainwash’s art has become a conversation piece for residents and visitors alike,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold.

“His unique brand is the perfect complement to the iconic character of Rodeo Drive and the City is proud to host this latest installation.”

Have a heart and scroll by a few of the sweet sculptures now or visit them in person through June 12.

A spectacular spot for a heart-themed artwork, with the Beverly Wilshire in the background.
A beautiful blue spin on the theme.

Beverly Crest neighbors furious after squatters take over multimillion-dollar home https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-neighbors-furious-after-squatters-take-over-multimillion-dollar-home/3321249/ 3321249 post 9244517 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/01/squatter-home.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Several people in the Beverly Crest and Beverly Hills areas say they are fed up after a multimillion-dollar home in their neighborhood was taken over by squatters.

While the Los Angeles Police Department says its officers have been to the property five times this month alone, residents in the area says authorities are not doing enough to help resolve the issue.

Fran Solomon owns the place next door, which she is renting out. She is one of several people frustrated by the many problems.

“They started doing these raging parties through crazy hours of the night,” Solomon said. “There have been trucks unloading things that we can’t quite identify in the middle of the night.”

“There have been narcotics seen in cars that are at the house,” she added. “These party goers are ringing neighbors’ doorbells at two and four o’clock in the morning.”

At one point, a hired private investigator discovered a party at the home, said to be a fundraiser for the victims of the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel.

Solomon said it is unclear who owns the home right now.

It was previously owned by Dr. Munir Uwaydah, who reportedly fled the U.S. after he was tied to his ex-girlfriend’s murder in her Santa Monica Apartment in 2008.

Most recently, records indicate it was owned by MDRCA Properties LLC, which filed for bankruptcy last year.

Another neighbor, Rick, is ready for the neighborhood to return to normal.

“We’re very concerned as neighbors for our own safety, for the safety of our kids and for our homes,” he said.

Rick said that not only have they called police to report problems, they also called the fire department and they’ve worked to get cars towed off their private properties.

“We’ve engaged with the Mayor’s Office to try to get a public safety officer, building and safety for trash, and we’re just not getting a lot of proactive response and coordinated response,” he added.

Rick said that now the City Attorney’s Office is involved and he hopes the squatters are evicted soon, but he worries it may take a few months.

That doesn’t sit well with Solomon.

“This is a very affluent area, paying exorbitant taxes and we can’t seem to get the proper response from the LAPD to close this down,” Solomon said. “The law-abiding citizens aren’t getting protection from criminals that have taken over a home that doesn’t belong to them.”

NBC4 reached out to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ office for comment, but have not heard back.

13 alleged members of organized burglary ring arrested https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/13-alleged-members-of-organized-burglary-ring-arrested/3311567/ 3311567 post 3202815 Getty Images/iStockphoto https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/police-car-siren.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Glendale police teamed up to arrest 13 alleged members of an organized burglary ring in December, authorities said.

Officials said Friday that the arrests were carried out by the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Los Angeles Division in collaboration with Beverly Hills Police Department and the Glendale Police Department.

The LAPD released the following details:

  • On Dec. 19, 2023, Glendale police located an alleged burglary group responsible for multiple burglaries in that city. “Officers observed three suspects enter a vehicle, wearing similar clothing consistent with descriptions previously provided. The officers began to drive in the direction of the area where the burglaries had occurred,” police said. “Glendale PD officers followed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. One suspect was detained and the other two fled on foot but were quickly apprehended. All three suspects were arrested for residential burglary.”
  • On Dec. 27, West Los Angeles area patrol officers responded to a radio call to meet BHPD officers in the area of Coldwater Canyon Drive south of Mulholland Drive to assist with a burglary investigation where approximately five suspects fled on foot. “The suspects’ vehicle was described as a black Ford Explorer. A perimeter was established, and three suspects were taken into custody after an extensive K-9 Unit search,” police said. “The … vehicle was impounded, and over one million dollars worth of stolen designer purses, clothing, watches and jewelry, belonging to the victim, were recovered.”
  • On Dec. 28, West Los Angeles detectives, along with Metropolitan Division officers, identified a residence where the suspects allegedly had been recently staying and stashing property. “A search of the suspect’s residence and vehicles resulted in the discovery of additional stolen designer purses, watches, jewelry and additional evidence linking the suspects to multiple crimes,” police said. “Three suspects were arrested on this incident. The case was submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office where all three suspects were filed on for one count of residential burglary.”
  • On Dec. 30, 2023, West Los Angeles area officers responded to a radio call of burglary suspects at a residence near Hutton Drive and Melinda Drive. Police said additional information was provided by the BHPD regarding a 2018 white Mercedes GLS used in an additional burglary in their area. “The white Mercedes GLS was located near the area and a female inside the vehicle was detained,” police said. “A perimeter was established, and four suspects were taken into custody after an extensive K-9 Unit search. All four suspects were arrested and booked for conspiracy to commit burglary.”

The LAPD added that over the last few weeks, detectives allegedly have discovered evidence connecting the arrests to a large organized burglary ring responsible for “a multitude of cases throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Detectives from the Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Burbank, and Glendale PD are working in concert along with additional affected agencies to identify the remaining members of the group and to secure additional charges for the crimes they are responsible for committing.

“Detectives have identified and returned most all the recovered stolen property to the rightful owners but hope to discover additional victims’ property through their continuing investigative efforts,” the LAPD added.

Anyone with additional information connected to the suspects was encouraged to contact detectives at 213-216-5308 or, during non-business hours or on weekends, 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247). What to Know

  • Lawry’s Beef Bowl at Lawry’s Prime Rib in Beverly Hills
  • The dinners, which celebrate the student-athletes, coaches, and schools of the upcoming Rose Bowl teams, began in 1957
  • The University of Michigan will visit the famous eatery on Dec. 28 and the University of Alabama will celebrate on Dec. 29

While it may be said, with total assuredness and utter confidence, that the Tournament of Roses and Pasadena go hand-in-hand, not every event related to the famous parade football game takes place in the Crown City, though most, most certainly, do.

Many of the flowery floats we see are carefully constructed in cities that neighbor Pasadena while Equestfest, a horsey happening that spotlights the parade’s ponies, trots at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank.

And Lawry’s Beef Bowl, a tantalizing tradition of the heartiest proportions?

The “Lawry’s” part of the name tells the tale: The dinners take place at Lawry’s Prime Rib in Beverly Hills, the location for the pre-game feasts since they first began in 1957.

Now, almost every year since, with just one year off, the Rose Bowl teams have enjoyed a celebratory meal at the La Cienega Boulevard restaurant.

These events are not open to the public, but you can bet that pictures will likely be shared by the student-athletes, teams, and schools. For it is a day brimming with pomp — a red carpet is rolled out and balloons festoon the eatery’s entryway — and prime rib.

Lots of prime rib, of course — it’s in the name — but the dinners also begin with a special ceremony that involves a spinning salad, another Lawry’s hallmark.

The Lawry’s team reveals that “… two players from each team will help with the opening dinner honors by spinning the famous Lawry’s tableside salad and making the ceremonial first cut of prime rib.”

The University of Michigan’s Beef Bowl night is scheduled for Dec. 28, while the University of Alabama will dine on Dec. 29. Coaches and athletic directors are also invited to enjoy the celebrations.

“The Beef Bowl is an opportunity for us to celebrate the players and coaches and kick off the festivities of the Rose Bowl Game,” said Ryan O’Melveny, CEO of Lawry’s Restaurants Inc.

“It’s a tradition that we look forward to every year as it has been passed down through my family for generations.”

The Royal Court will also join both Beef Bowls as well as Tournament of Roses officials, another time-honored element of the decades-old dining event.

‘I was hit as a Jew': Couple assaulted in Beverly Hills hate crime attack speaks out https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/jewish-couple-attacked-beverly-hills-hate-crime/3287965/ 3287965 post 9137785 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/12/beverly-hills-couple-hurt.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A Jewish couple that was attacked in what’s being investigated as a hate crime in Beverly Hills is speaking out about the assault and how their faith is helping them push through the harrowing experience.

Raphy and Rebecca, who asked NBC4 not to use their last names, are staying resilient after they were attacked while walking to the Beverly Hills Synagogue. While taking their stroll near the area of North Rexford Drive and North Santa Monica Boulevard, a man ran up behind the couple in a robbery attempt.

“All of a sudden, I see the guy hitting my husband with the belt and screaming, ‘Give me your earrings, Jew,'” an emotional Rebecca recalls.

The attacker struck Raphy repeatedly.

“At first, it was shock,” Raphy said. “It was a huge hard knock on my forehead here.” The victim added that the blows left his face bloodied.

Unable to let the attack go, the couple bravely chased after the assailant. That’s when a police officer noticed the commotion and called for backup.

The Beverly Hills Police Department arrested Jarris Jay Silagi, 44. He faces charges that include assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, hate crime and elder abuse. He is being held on $100,000 bail.

“Our officers quickly apprehended the suspect and he is in custody,” said Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook.  “This despicable act of hate against a member of our community will not be tolerated.”

“I was enraged, not because of the thing, but because I was hit as a jew,” Raphy said.

After the terrifying ordeal, the couple returned home so Raphy could get a clean change of clothes and then made their way back to the synagogue.

“I hope that with the help of God and everybody who is at the head of states and communities, they will bring down evil, and the light will shine and next year on Hannukah, it will be a very bright light,” Rebecca said.

The actor and comedian was detained after Beverly Hills police received a call about 5:45 a.m. Police said she appeared to be found slumped over the wheel of the vehicle while the car engine was still running.

Haddish, an Emmy and Grammy winner, performed at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles on Thursday night. It was the comedy club’s 43rd annual free Thanksgiving feast for the community.

A representative for Haddish did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Last year, Haddish was arrested on suspicion of DUI in suburban Atlanta.

Haddish has starred in the films including the comedy “Girls Trip,” “Night School,” “Like a Boss” and “The Kitchen.” She wrote the New York Times best seller “The Last Black Unicorn,” which earned a Grammy nomination.

In 2018, Haddish won an Emmy for her appearance on “Saturday Night Live” and a Grammy in 2021 for her special “Black Mitzvah.”

When a film makes its way to the stage — which isn’t always a given, seeing as how few movies truly do — it often hews fairly strictly to everything that fans saw on the big screen.

That’s been changing in recent years, with fresh songs and novel dance numbers appearing in live productions, giving people who know the film by heart something new to look forward to when visiting a performance venue.

An intriguing example of this film-to-stage experience, but with an uplifting twist, is “Love Actually Live.” It is a live show that takes its plot notes and character development from the Christmas classic, but it tells the intertwining stories in an inventive way.

This has been a hit with audiences, so it is no surprise that “Love Actually Live” is returning to The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts for a multi-week engagement starting on Nov. 22.

It’s the fourth go-around for this joyful production, which employs technology to weave some of the film’s most tender touchstones into what’s happening in the theater.

Songs are the main and moving driver in the stage show, but wait: Some of the best-loved moments from the heartfelt film will also be screened, enhancing the emotion.

“Iconic scenes from the movie are displayed on screens that move throughout the set, complemented by an all-star cast of singers and a live orchestra, delivering a reimagined soundtrack featuring beloved songs such as ‘Christmas is All Around,’ ‘Trouble with Love,’ and Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now,’ The Wallis team revealed.

“We are overjoyed to welcome ‘Love Actually Live’ back to our stage,” said The Wallis’ Executive Director and CEO Robert van Leer.

“There is no better way to celebrate and enjoy the holiday season than with the visionary cast, crew, and beautifully supported live orchestra that makes this performance one to remember.”

Adding an added swirl of sparkle to this outing? “Love Actually” is marking its 20th anniversary in 2003.

It’s a seasonal treat that’s shown staying power through the years and now decades, and with its memorable soundtrack in tow plus new music, it has become a perfect work for the stage.

Tickets start at $69 and may be purchased here.

Police investigate antisemitic graffiti in Beverly Hills https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/police-investigate-antisemitic-graffiti-in-beverly-hills/3254713/ 3254713 post 9027822 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/10/10272023-beverly-hills-hate-crime.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Beverly Hills police are investigating two instances of antisemitic graffiti as a hate crime, and they believe the same person is responsible for both.

At least one of the messages called for the killing of Jews. The graffiti has been covered up, but the Jewish community is still concerned in the city where they say they used to feel safe.

“There are a lot of people that don’t like Jewish people for whatever reason. I’m still trying to figure out why,” said Geoffry Lipman, whose apartment building was tagged with an antisemitic message.

Lipman said he was “aggravated” and frightened. After living in Beverly Hills for 20 years, he said, he believed the city was a safe place.

Beverly Hills police say they got two calls Wednesday afternoon – about 30 minutes apart – both calling for violence against Jewish people. The first call came from Bedford Drive and the second from Palms Avenue.

Renee Firestone lived through the Holocaust as a young woman. Now 99, she’s perturbed by the ongoing hate.

“When this happened, I kept wondering why,” Firestone said.

The Anti-Defamation League says it’s recorded 312 antisemitic  incidents in the U.S. from the day of the Hamas attacks in Israel – on Oct. 7 – through Oct. 23. That’s nearly five times the number of incidents during the same period last year.

But Lipman says the Jewish community has felt uneasy for quite some time, since long before the Israel Hamas war.

For her part, Firestone hopes the wisdom from one generation sparks acceptance and respect among many more to come.

“We can talk to each other. We have to – not just can – we have to talk to each other,” she said. “And we have to make them understand that today it happens to me, but tomorrow it may happen to you.”

Dip into TenderFest, a savory celebration of local eateries (and creative condiments, too) https://www.nbclosangeles.com/the-scene/dip-into-tenderfest-a-savory-celebration-of-local-eateries-and-creative-condiments-too/3246725/ 3246725 post 8999386 bfk92 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/10/GettyImages-1309272360.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • TenderFest 2023
  • Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
  • $79 (early bird) and up

Chicken tenders are the meal of choice for so many tots — and adults, too.

These timeless tidbits may arrive shaped like dinosaurs, cars, or stars, boasting an especially light breading or heavy coating of crumb, but the small and snackable shapes are found on thousands of lunch and dinner plates across Southern California, each and every day.

But the childhood favorite isn’t just about what we eat at our kitchen table; imaginative local chefs have long created a variety of tenders, with spicy batters, larger portions, and an intriguing assortment of dipping sauces adding variety and depth to the tender-centered dining experience.

To honor those inventive tender-ists and the fans who are forever seeking a sensational chicken finger or nugget, there is TenderFest, a food festival that is about the fried favorites.

Or, if not fried, then baked or prepared in a different and surprising ways: The chefs set to show at the Oct. 22 food festival, which will line up the dips and dining delights at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, are taking inspired approaches to tender preparation.

There is, in fact, the “conTENDER competition,” where several regional greats will go for greatness, all to see who shall be crowned the titan of tenders.

Burt Bakman of SLAB, Joan McNamara of Joan’s on Third, and Kuya Lord’s Maynard Llera will all be at the Beverly Hills-based bash.

There is a savory showdown, yes, but the festival is very much about feasting. Other restaurants planning to present their best tenders to those in attendance include Harold & Belle’s, Pioneer Chicken, and Le Coupe.

And because a tender’s best pal is always a sizable ramekin of something creamy, saucy, and possibly piquant, condiments will also be in the spotlight, including the debut of some fresh flavors from Heinz.

Tickets start at $79 and there are a few tiers to consider, including a VIP option.

Beverly Hills-born Israeli military sergeant's request for socks turns into care package effort https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-born-israeli-military-sergeants-request-for-socks-turns-into-care-package-effort/3245065/ 3245065 post 8993866 Rabbi Pini Dunner https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/10/meir-dunner-israel-soldier.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Police said an emerald-encrusted Patek Philippe watch worth at least $1 million, stolen at gunpoint from a tourist in Beverly Hills, was found after the arrests of three men in Miami, Florida accused of being involved in organized thefts of luxury goods across the U.S.

Beverly Hills bans silly string and shaving cream for Halloween https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/beverly-hills-bans-silly-string-shaving-cream-ban-halloween/3229601/ 3229601 post 8929109 NBC4 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/09/09212023-beverly-hills-silly-string-ban-e1695353805280.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Beverly Hills City Council unanimously passed a measure Tuesday that bans the use of shaving cream, silly string and hair removal products for 24 hours starting on Halloween.

City leaders say the decision was made with the interest of public safety in mind. The city says these products have led to injuries in the past.

A popular Beverly Hills home commonly known as the Witch’s House has a history of issues related to silly string and shaving cream, according to Mayor Julian Gold.

“This is not driven by our theoretic concerns. This is driven by our experience,” Gold said. “There were several events, maybe more than just several, in front of the Witch’s House related to the use of shaving cream and silly string and Nair, where members of the public and kids in particular got injured.”

Parent Charlie Morales understands the city’s reasoning.

“How can you see it being dangerous?” Morales said. “Like I said, you can throw it on somebody’s windshield, block somebody’s view, throw it outside the window, spray somebody’s car with it — it’s dangerous.”

The ordinance, which applies to people aged 21 years and younger, goes into effect at 6 a.m. on Halloween. The city is working with school districts to educate children about these issues.

“We’re going to have bins where if you bring it you’ll have to leave it, if the police see you with it, they’re going to tell you, ‘You can’t do that, put it in the bin,’” Gold said.

The man behind the wheel of the stolen Toyota stolen from the lot was arrested after an hour-long standoff in the dealership parking lot.

The pursuit began at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday when officers responded to a break-in at the Hollywood Toyota dealership. Video showed a white Toyota sedan driving around the property before crashing through a chain link fence. The driver then rammed through the red metal gate of the business in the 6000 block of Hollywood Boulevard and onto the street in front of officers.

Police pursued the driver through Beverly Hills before he stopped at the Lamborghini dealership in the 8400 block of Wilshire Boulevard. The man used rocks and other objects to break a dealership window before an hour-long standoff inside the business.

Police closed in at about 3 a.m. and took the man into custody.

Details about the man’s identity were not immediately available.

Lawsuit accuses Beverly Hills police of racially profiling Black motorists https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/lawsuit-accuses-beverly-hills-police-of-racially-profiling-black-motorists/3223537/ 3223537 post 8904333 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/09/Beverly-Hills-Police-Department-generic-bhpd.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A lawsuit accuses Beverly Hills police of racially profiling nearly 1,100 Black people during traffic stops.

The suit announced Monday was filed on behalf of most of the Black drivers who were pulled over in the wealthy city between August 2019 and August 2021.

Out of a total of 1,088 Black motorists stopped, only two were convicted of crimes, attorney Benjamin Crump said at a news conference.

About a third of all arrests made during the period involved Black individuals, who make up only 1.5% of the city’s population, Crump said.

“It wasn’t to deter crime. It was to send a message to Black people that we don’t want your kind around here,” Crump said. “That is racial profiling 101!”

The city denied the allegations, saying in a statement, “The statistics presented referencing the number of convictions is a mischaracterization of the evidence in this case. In addition, the 1,088 arrests referenced includes people cited and released, not just custodial arrests.”

“The City of Beverly Hills is an international destination that always welcomes visitors from across the country and around the world,” it said. “The role of the Beverly Hills Police Department is to enforce the law, regardless of race.”

The suit seeks $500 million in damages.

Law clerk Shepherd York was was one of the people who were pulled over, for having expired license plates as he was driving to work, attorneys said.

“I spent three days in jail,” York said at the news conference. “Humiliated, scared, sad.”

His car was searched and impounded, but he was never convicted of a crime, attorneys said.

Mondays?

They have a knack for turning up with impressive regularity, again and again and again.

One minute is Friday and the next minute it is Monday and we’re saying “wait, wasn’t it just Friday a minute ago?” to anyone within earshot. (Anyone within earshot understands the plaintive nature of our question.)

But there are ways to add a nice Friday-style gloss to the first day of the week. Packing your favorite lunch, for starters, can de-Monday our mood, as can a deal that is really quite excellent.

More than excellent, the new “Monday Madness” tickets from The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts put us in a weekend-ish frame of mind, well before the weekend is in view.

How does this winning new Wallis program work? A number of $10 tickets (yep, that number is limited) will be released to the public each Monday beginning on Sept. 4.

That is, indeed, Labor Day, but the program shall continue into September.

There are a few things to know, like the swiftness with which you’ll need to enjoy these savings. The “(o)ffer expires on the Sunday after each Monday Madness ticket drop at 11:59 PM, or while supplies last,” is a good thing to keep in mind.

“The Wallis believes everyone should have access to the performing arts,” is the stirring reason behind this deal. It’s a deal created “… to expand opportunities for art lovers, culture seekers, and locals or tourists.”

Just be sure to type in the code MADNESS when checking out and, again, remember that these sweet tickets are limited each week.

So delaying getting yours? Don’t you dare: Monday may be synonymous with getting a slow start, but now we have more cause to joyfully embrace the first day of the week.

Thieves target Beverly Hills wig shop that serves cancer patients https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/thieves-target-beverly-hills-wig-shop-that-serves-cancer-patients/3211372/ 3211372 post 8857505 The Wig Fairy https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/08/wig-fairy-breakin-82223.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Thieves smashed their way into a Beverly Hills wig shop and in a mere two minutes, made off with thousands of dollars of merchandise that included hair pieces for clients going through chemotherapy.

The Wig Fairy, a La Cienega Boulevard-based shop, specializes in selling wigs made from human hair. A large part of the business’ clientele is made of people who are experiencing hair loss, including those who are going through cancer treatments.

“They come to us and say, ’Please make me look like myself. The last thing I need is — I don’t want people to give me pity. I don’t want people to know I am wearing wigs,” said Mona Zargar, the business’ owner.

Surveillance footage captured what appeared to be three individuals breaking into the store on Tuesday and ransacking it before taking off. Although disappointed with the loss, Zargar said she is most torn about not being able to deliver for her customers.

“How do I explain to them that I don’t have a wig for you?” she said.

Zargar explained that the process of creating the wigs is a personal one, with each client in mind to make them shine.

“We do color them to match their skin tones to what their natural hair looks,” the shop’s owner said. “Like, we cut them according to their face shape we cut them to fit their heads.”

Beverly Hills police are investigating the burglary and believe the three thieves may be women. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Beverly Hills Police Department at 310-550-4951.

The Dog Days of Summer can involve a sedate state of mind, a lighthearted approach to life, the sunniest stretch of the year, or a little bit of all of the above.

But if you’re talking National Dog Day, you’re talking about a specific date on the canine-loving calendar, a holiday that always trots into our worlds at the end of August, just about the time that those ol’ Dog Days being to wind down.

It’s Aug. 26, which you surely know, and we say “surely” as every pet store, site, and mailer keeps tabs on when the time to celebrate our tail-waggers will gleefully arrive.

But Sofitel LA is getting an early and ebullient jump on the party with a special National Dog Day Eve party on Friday, Aug. 25.

The happy hour — or rather “Yappy Hour” — begins at the oh-so-happy-hour-ish time of 5 o’clock and the place? You bet: It’s the stylish hotel, the one that sits at the spot where Beverly Hills meets Los Angeles.

Dogs are invited (of course) and there’ll be bites and beverages available for purchase. Wagmor is a partner in the event, and adoptable pooches will be in the house.

A photo booth will be on the premises because if you and your hound are in matching outfits, you’ll want pictorial proof. And a giveaway? That’s part of the Fido-centered fun, too.

It’s a two-hour to-do, meaning you can get your little one home before dark and settled in for the night.

After all, they’ll want to turn in early, seeing as how Aug. 25 is National Dog Day Eve. Who knows what dogly delights will await them when the official occasion arrives on Aug. 26?

Lawry's The Prime Rib celebrates 85 years with some milestone meals and deals https://www.nbclosangeles.com/the-scene/lawrys-the-prime-rib-celebrates-85-years-with-some-milestone-meals-and-deals/3194647/ 3194647 post 8778830 Lawry's The Prime Rib https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/07/lawrys85thanniversary.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • The famous Beverly Hills fine dining destination celebrates 85 years in August
  • An $85 four-course prix fixe meal will be on the menu from Aug. 1-15, 2023
  • A Lawry’s French Dip Sandwich will be available at the bar; the $19.38 price is an ode to the year the restaurant was founded

So many restaurants take years to build up to one memorable touchstone, that indelible detail that people always mention when discussing the iconic establishment.

It might be a particular soup or appetizer or design flourish, but fans, even those who’ve only visited once or twice, can instantly recall the venue’s best-known qualities.

Lawry’s The Prime Rib has a plethora of such showy staples, from the dish that appears in the restaurant’s name to that celebrated spinning bowl salad to the fact that the Rose Bowl teams regularly dine there, pre-game, to the beloved Victorian carolers during the holiday season.

But the Beverly Hills icon has spent eight delicious decades, plus an additional five years on top of that, working up to this level of noble know-ability. And if you know Lawry’s The Prime Rib, you can bet they’ll do something pretty splashy to honor the milestone.

And so they shall: The eatery is marking 85 years in August 2023 in a few different ways, from serving a Lawry’s French Dip Sandwich at the bar for $19.38 — an ode to the year the restaurant started — to an $85 specialty cocktail called The Jubilee.

Whistle Pig 15-Year is the deep-toned star of the sip, along with “black cherry- and morel mushroom-infused Carpano Antica vermouth, bianco vermouth, housemade white raisin and saffron bitters and allspice dram.”

More craft goes into this stylish cocktail, including the fact that it is “smoked with pecan shells, and the glass? It is engraved, and, for sure, you may take it home.

And from Aug. 1-15?

A prix fixe four-course menu, priced at $85, will give diners a choice of a number of notable dishes, among them a California cut of prime rib. Of course and no doubt about it, that spinning bowl salad makes a cameo, as does a lobster & shrimp Louie cocktail served accompanied by a Champagne toast.

“For 85 years, Lawry’s The Prime Rib has provided its guests with a unique dining experience rich in history, great food and world-class hospitality, and we couldn’t be happier to invite our community in to celebrate this milestone with us,” said Ryan O’Melveny Wilson, CEO of Lawry’s Restaurants Inc.

“The incredible milestone would not have been possible without the support from our loyal Angeleno community and our hardworking staff.”

More patients hit by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon data breach, exposing sensitive photos, private information https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/more-patients-hit-by-beverly-hills-plastic-surgeon-data-breach-exposing-sensitive-photos-private-information/3195359/ 3195359 post 8783105 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/07/hacker.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 One patient of a well-known Beverly Hills plastic surgeon whose topless photos and personal information is posted on the internet is in search of information about what happened and what is being done about it.

It’s been almost 15 years since a patient we’re calling Jane to protect her identity saw Dr. Gary Motykie for breast surgery. Late last month, she found out from another patient her topless photos and personal information had been posted to a public website.

“I’m just horrified, just completely physically ill, because I had not prior knowledge,” Jane said.

As of this week, there are now 14 rows of women, around 80 patients, with their names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers and financial information, plus medical records, posted on the web.

“Apparently, I’m just like some row, like another row of women that’s released,” Jane said. “There are literally all these women, all these rows.”

I’m just horrified, just completely physically ill, because I had not prior knowledge (of the hack).

“Jane,” former patient of Dr. Gary Motykie

Also on the site are what appear to be images of Dr. Motykie, described in a lawsuit filed about this breach as “extremely disturbing pornographic, home-made videos.”

Two days after the first report by the I-Team, Dr Motykie’s legal team filed updated information with the Attorney General’s Office in Maine, listing the breach as affecting 3,461 patients.

“It’s very unusual, and it’s actually not like any extortion attempt I’ve ever seen before,“ said threat analyst Brett Callow of cybersecurity firm Emsisoft.

Callow is very familiar with seeing data breaches on the dark web.

It’s very unusual, and it’s actually not like any extortion attempt I’ve ever seen before.

Brett Callow, Threat Analyst

“Those websites are usually sloppily created. There’s not much effort that goes into them,” said Callow. “But this one is different. It does appear as some care went into it, and it seems specifically intended to outrage.”

And outrage is what Jane says she is feeling. She said she reached out to Motykie’s office and the LA County Sheriff’s Department weeks ago, but she says she didn’t hear back from anyone.

“Nobody, and that’s why I contacted you,” Jane said.

“In my personal opinion, patients and people in general should find out there information has been compromised from the organizations which lost their data,” Callow said. “It should never ever be through the hackers.”

Motykie filed a report about the extortion with the LA County Sheriff’s Department on May 11, saying he first communicated with the hackers in April. According to that report, he told detectives they demanded $2.5 million in crypto currency “to prevent his personal photographs/videos and photographs of his patients from being made public.”

In early June, the first 36 patients were exposed online. Among them was Elina Shaffy, who filed a lawsuit about the breach claiming “intentional infliction of emotional distress.” But she says she did not receive notification about the breach from Motykie’s office until June 30, after the I-Team reached out to the doctor for comment that same day.

On July 6, the American Board of Plastic surgery sent a message to its members, the third one since May, warning of “fraudulent ransomware aimed at plastic surgeons.” The alert explains that emails appearing to come from the board office have an attachment or link that when clicked on, “launches the ransomware and combs for patient data and photos.” The FBI is investigating.

On July 19, nine days after the first report by the I-team, Motykie reported the breach to the California attorney general as required by law, outlining the data at risk. As previously reported, that data includes detailed personal information, ranging from social security and driver’s license numbers to financial information, medical records and images.

As of July 27, Motykie’s website does not directly reference the data breach, but does have a warning posted: “Beware of impersonators!”

NBC4 reached out to Motykie for an on-camera interview, he declined. However, his social media and public relations manager told the I-Team by phone that their No. 1 interest is in protecting the victims.

“We try our best to reach out to the patients directly and we’ve spoken to a multitude of patients,” said Ethan Reynolds.  “But this is a high-volume practice so there’s no way we could personally connect with every patient that’s ever been part of the practice.”

Reynolds also noted contact information for patients could have changed. He said the FBI was at the office last week, but that’s little comfort to Jane.

“I am a sitting duck,” she said.

Just this week the hackers posted a new note on the site, announcing a change in strategy, writing in part: “…before publishing a new client’s data, we give them a choice. If the client is willing to pay $2,500, we guarantee that their data will be deleted on our end and will not go public.”

But cyber experts warn against that.

“It makes little sense for patients to pay in this case. There is no guarantee the data will be removed, and the hacker is a criminal. They’re not a trustworthy person,” Callow said.

Jane is troubled her information from so many years ago was even accessible to the hackers.

“It shouldn’t even exist in his system at this point!” she said. “I should have been so buried and encrypted in archives that I would never, never be in this at all.”

Last week she also filed a report online with the FBI. For her, the breach has been emotionally devastating and traumatizing.

“My biggest question is, who’s talking to the women, who’s talking to he faces that’s in those rows?” asked Jane. “Because no one’s talking to me.”

Expert tips to protect yourself from a hack

  • Never click on a link or attachment that feels the least bit strange.
  • Better yet, visit links by typing in an address rather than clicking on one provided in an email or text message.
  • Use two factor authentication whenever possible. The first factor is a password. The second commonly includes a text or email with a code sent to you, or uses biometrics, like your fingerprint or face ID
  • Keep your computer and cell phone up to date with the latest operating system he and security patches
  • if you are hacked, report it to the FBI by filing an IC3 report.

Prepare for nostalgia: The OG ‘Beverly Hills, 90210' cast is reuniting at 90s Con https://www.nbclosangeles.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/prepare-for-nostalgia-the-og-beverly-hills-90210-cast-is-reuniting-at-90s-con/3185797/ 3185797 post 8742138 Mark Sennet/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/07/GettyImages-1458028753.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A West Beverly Hills High School reunion is in the works.

Beverly Hills, 90210″ alum Shannen Doherty, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Ian Ziering and Gabrielle Carteris will all gather together at 90s Con in Tampa, Florida, E! News can exclusively announce.

The cast will attend a 90210 panel and participate in fan meet-and-greets during Sept. 16 and 17 at the Tampa Convention Center.

The epic get-together will be the largest reunion for the 90210 cast in recent years, with Green and Carteris attending 90s Con for the first time ever.

“Beverly Hills, 90210” ran for 10 seasons from 1990 to 2000. However, the cast has kept in touch in the years after beloved teen drama went off the air.

In 2016, all but Doherty — who was undergoing radiation treatments for breast cancer at the time—reunited for REWind Con. During the panel, Luke Perry, who died in 2019 at age 52, paid tribute to Doherty.

Beverly Hills, 90210: Where Are They Now?

“[Doherty was] a very big part of the success of the show, ” Perry said, per Entertainment Weekly. “None of us are up here today without Shannen. She’s been through a lot. She’s not doing well right now, but sometimes her contributions are minimized.”

Spelling and Garth also continued to a build a bond outside of the show, which inspired the creation of the 90210MG podcast

“We’ve been best friends, off camera for 30 years, so we originally just wanted to do a girlfriend’s podcast and talk about what it’s like going through every like era, decade and transition of your life together and still [be] stronger than ever,” Spelling told NBC Los Angles in 2020. “And then we were like ‘Oh but the fans, they want 90210,’ so we decided to make it a blend.

Major data breach at Beverly Hills plastic surgeon's office exposes patients' sensitive information https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/major-data-breach-at-beverly-hills-plastic-surgeons-office-exposes-patients-sensitive-information/3185086/ 3185086 post 8740111 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/07/Video-69.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The major data breach of Dr. Gary Motykie, a popular Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, led to sensitive information being posted on a public website, along with what appears to be very private images of the doctor himself.

According to a report filed with the LA County Sheriff’s Department, Motykie received an extortion threat in May. The crooks allegedly demanded he pay two and half million dollars to prevent the patient data, and his own, from going public.

By early June, someone posted data of 36 patients online. Now, personal details and pictures of more than 70 patients are on the site, and there’s concern among patients that more could be posted at any moment.

“I mean, this is just heinous,” said patient Elaina Shaffy as she looked at the website.

Shaffy first learned her private information was made very public from another patient of Dr. Motykie’s.

Not only have they compromised your financial, your personal, and then they’re seeing you in these vulnerable, horrible pictures. Who wants anyone to see those photos?

Elina Shaffy, Former Patient

“One of the women that had their information compromised on the website contacted me and said, ‘My god, my god, how much did you pay to have your stuff removed?’’’ said Shaffy, unaware of what the woman was talking about. “I had absolutely no idea.”

Shaffy logged onto the website and found her picture, taken at the doctor’s office, along with her name, phone number and email address. Since she had nasal surgery, the picture posted is of her face, but many of the other images include patients’ breasts along with their names, birthdates, phone numbers, email addresses, and links to their medical records and financial information.

Some are known social media influencers, and each week the hacker has added more patients to the site. There are now more than 70 women exposed.

“Not only have they compromised your financial, your personal, and then they’re seeing you in these vulnerable, horrible pictures. Who wants anyone to see those photos?” said Shaffy.

Shaffy has now filed a lawsuit claiming negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The suit  alleges the doctor was careless in “storing extremely private patient information” in a way that “third parties were able to access it, post it on the internet and then seek to extort money from Motykie and Motykie’s patients,” and notes, “if all this were not enough, defendants also stored extremely disturbing pornographic homemade videos filmed of Dr. Motykie pleasuring himself.”

Videos and images of what appear to be the doctor are posted at the top of the hacker’s website, right above all the patients’ data.

A lot of weirdos are out there and your information is now public. If you start getting advances from people that seem weird, you should report that sooner rather than later

Michael Hamilton, Cyber Security Expert

“Wow it’s shocking, it’s shocking,” said Shaffy.

After learning of the site’s existence, Shaffy searched her junk mail and found the hacker had reached out to her and other patients on June 8, 2023 about the breach and ransom demand.

She says she immediately emailed the hacker, and what she learned surprised her. “Somebody had paid a great deal of money to have my profile removed,” said Shaffy

Her picture was also the only one not linked to her medical record and financial information. It is unclear who paid.

Shaffy says she emailed the hacker, offering to also pay for her medical record. But the hacker told Shaffy her data was purged and instead offered her the chance to purchase all the other records on the site for $800,000 dollars, to which she declined.

When asked what this tells her about her doctor’s cybersecurity, Shaffy responded, “It just tells me that he was so reckless and that he just did not care about anyone.”

That’s what she claims in her lawsuit: “…the failure to take adequate steps to secure such highly sensitive patient material was more than negligent, it was reckless…”

“There is a trend toward criminals going down market, towards clinics and smaller organizations that are known to be less protected,” said Michael Hamilton, co-founder of Critical Insight.

Hamilton is an information security specialist and consultant with expertise in health care cybersecurity. The I-Team reached out for his assessment of this case.

“This one is a little different,” said Hamilton.

He says the data dump of patient records combined with what appears to be very private pictures and videos of Dr. Motykie is unusual.

“The first question that comes to mind is why these things were mixed up,” said Hamilton. “There are multiple regulators that get involved now.”

The I-Team reached out to Dr. Motykie for an on-camera interview, but he declined. Instead he sent a statement saying he cannot comment on pending litigation, but he did confirm the data breach, stating in part: “the third-party responsible for this situation has made demands for money in exchange for information to be deleted.  We and law enforcement cannot guarantee that any payment will result in information being deleted or used in any way in the future. … we continue to work very closely with law enforcement.”

Michael Hamilton offered advice for patients whose data was breached.

“A lot of weirdos are out there and your information is now public. If you start getting advances from people that seem weird, you should report that sooner rather than later.”

Shaffy says she and other patients she’s spoken with are haunted by this breach.

“Who else has our information? Did they sell it to somebody else? Is it going to be on some other website we don’t even know about? “

The LA County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, along with the FBI. The detective assigned to the case emailed patients whose data was breached, explaining he was unsuccessful in taking down the website. He told patients, “It is being operated out of Russia.”

The detective also said Dr. Motykie would be offering patients a two-year subscription for identity theft protection. The patients who spoke with the I-Team say that is not nearly enough.

Full statement of Gary Motykie:

Any alleged data security incidents are investigated, and appropriate steps are taken. We do not provide any public information about any alleged incidents until we have what we believe to be accurate and complete information, and we cannot speak to any pending litigation and ongoing law enforcement involvement.

Battle brews in Beverly Hills over affordable housing development https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/battle-brews-in-beverly-hills-over-affordable-housing-development/3184212/ 3184212 post 8735747 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/07/07072023-beverly-hills-affordable-housing-battle.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A battle is brewing in Beverly Hills as developers attempt to use a newly strengthened state law to build more affordable housing.

The Builder’s Remedy is a 1990 law that’s been strengthened in recent years, allowing developers to essentially override local zoning regulations. Proponents say it’s needed to address the housing crisis, but opponents argue it will change cities for the worse.

Right now, Beverly Hills is ground zero in a fight with implications across Southern California.

Abe Cohen supports the effort to build hundreds of new apartments in his city, including a 19-story building on the corner of South Linden Drive and Wilshire Boulevard.

“A lot of houses should be added,” Cohen said. If it means more people moving into Beverly Hills, they’re “more than welcome,” he added.

The Linden Drive building is one of multiple projects being proposed in the city, with a portion of units for low-income housing as developers use the Builder’s Remedy to bypass local zoning regulations.

Advocates say Beverly Hills is one of many cities that have largely ignored state requirements to allow for more housing as the state’s housing crisis has worsened.

“This is the legal consequence for refusing to do that work and plan for the housing that the state and the region need,” said Dave Rand an attorney representing several developers.

A Builder’s Remedy effort to build 14 new buildings in Santa Monica resulted in a compromise of 10 buildings and more local control. But Beverly Hills continues to oppose such efforts, its mayor telling KCRW that, “We know best what our community wants.”

“If you believe in more equity, in more inclusion and more diversity and more housing choices for different types of people, then I think this Builder’s Remedy is in the public good,” Rand argued.

The state is demanding that Beverly Hills plan for more than 3,000 apartment units in the next six years. Right now, the city has about 8,500.

Teri Penski, a Westwood resident, backs the more aggressive push for additional affordable housing.

“There are just a lot of people who cannot afford housing, cannot afford the houses here,” she said.

What to Know

  • Rodeo Drive Concours D’Elegance
  • Sunday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Free; Rodeo Drive at Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills

Father’s Day, arriving, as it does, on the last Sunday before summer officially arrives, has become synonymous with sunny celebrations around Southern California.

And one of the sunniest? It has to be the gathering that’s come to a showy stop in the Golden Triangle over the last several years: the Rodeo Drive Concours D’Elegance.

Sunny in spirit — the outdoor car show is totally free to attend, and no reservation is required — and often full of sunshine, a brightness that seems even stronger thanks to the sun glinting off all of those freshly polished automobiles, the Concours D’Elegance is marking 28 years in 2023.

If you’ve been to all 28 Father’s Day car-taculars, then you’ve seen thousands of incredible dream machines, with a number of themes spotlighting luxury makers, British gems, vintage treasures, and the occasional Learjet, too (a plane made a memorable cameo at the 2013 event).

The 2023 haute happening will feature over 100 elegant and eye-catching automobiles with “… supercars and race cars” on view, as well as “iconic classics and custom-built showstoppers provided by exclusive private collections, passionate car enthusiasts, and even some of the world’s most recognized manufacturers.”

A dozen awards will be handed out, including “Most Outrageous,” a title that could be easily taken by many entrants.

If you’d like to see what auto nabs which honor, be at the main stage around 12:20 p.m. on June 18.

Food trucks and carts will dot Rodeo Drive from Wilshire Boulevard to Santa Monica Boulevard, while nearby restaurants will be open for Father’s Day brunching. Be sure to make your dining reservations in advance, given the holiday, unless you plan on snacking at the pop-up eateries along the way.

Dairy good news: The famous Cheese Store of Beverly Hills to expand https://www.nbclosangeles.com/the-scene/dairy-good-news-the-famous-cheese-store-of-beverly-hills-to-expand/3166681/ 3166681 post 8668348 The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/06/New-Cheese-Store-Storefront-Rendering.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills was founded in 1967
  • The fabled cheese-and-more shop will move from Beverly Drive to South Santa Monica Boulevard later this summer
  • The new larger location will offer an even “wider selection of cheese” as well as fresh pastas, tapenades, and more

One thing is true for the lover of melts, fondues, raclettes, and poutines: The refrigerator dairy drawer, no matter how capacious, is never large enough.

Especially after the dairy devotee has called upon a sublime shop like The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, one of Southern California’s longest-running and most lauded cheeseries.

Founded in 1967, the stocked-with-sophisticated-snacks store has become a stalwart on the regional cheeses-and-more scene, offering a variety of cheddars, goudas, blues, and beyond, as well as all of the accompaniments that so flavorfully enhance such sublime supping.

But if you’ve been rolling your wheels in the direction of Beverly Drive for a good long time to pick up a wheel or two of your favorite savory spreadable, you’ll soon want to look to 9705 S. Santa Monica Boulevard, where the new, greatly expanded Cheese Store will soon debut.

“For more than twenty years, The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills has been like a second home to me, and I am thrilled to combine all of the aspects of the store that our customers have cherished for the past half century with a much more modern, robust culinary experience,” said Dominick DiBartolomeo, owner of The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills.

“The new location will offer so much more to the community that’s supported us since day one.”

The specialty foods line-up at the new flagship store will also feature Domenico’s Foods, which will soon be shipped nationwide.

The company, which features pestos, sauces, and more, is “…DiBartolomeo’s fresh and imported Italian specialty foods brand, which he launched at The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills many years back with the debut of his home-made, sun-dried tomatoes.”

But it isn’t simply about shopping for great ingredients, gourmet gift baskets, or the sorts of quick pick-up items that make for a classy dinner at home; the expanded Cheese Store will include tony tastings, appetizing events, and other special happenings that will up the venue’s convivial spirit.

Wines, craft beers, and celebratory libations will also be for sale. For all things cheesy and cheerful, wheel by this site for updates on the upcoming location.

  • Beverly Hills Art Show at Beverly Gardens Park
  • May 20 and 21, 2023
  • 325 artists are expected to display their work; food trucks, a beer garden, and diversions of delight will dot the festival grounds

Beverly Hills knows how to host an outsized airy affair, the sort of under-the-sun — or stars — celebration that has oodles of dazzle, a hefty amount of razzle, and the sort of style that’s long been associated with the Golden Triangle.

Look to Father’s Day, and Rodeo Drive, where a bevy of chrome-cool cars parade through the city, and park, all to delight devotees of dream machines. And the Christmas kick-off, the one with the fireworks and performances and Santa sightings? That, too, is quintessentially Beverly Hills.

Now an art extravaganza that will soon mark its 50th anniversary is arriving to give us a taste of summertime and the sorts of stroll-so-easy events that are filled with art-looking, food-snacking, and the sipping of fine vino.

It’s the Beverly Hills Art Show, and it will unfurl at a spot that boasts one of the city’s most iconic signs: Beverly Gardens Park.

The free-to-enter happening will feature all sorts of artworks, from photos to paintings to sculptures, and, of course, the always lovely chance to chat with artists.

Activities created for kids are on the schedule, and coming across a community exhibit or two? That will likely happen if you make plans to saunter through the whole thing.

And “whole thing” should absolutely imply just how big this is: Some 325 artists are expected to show for the show.

A show, by the by, that has spring-meets-summer panache, the sort of free, sunshiny, soak-up-the-art aura that we come to expect, or at least hope for, when the outdoor festivals begin popping up around the city come May.

As for those May dates? Bask in one of the biggest art spectaculars around, as well as that quintessential Beverly Hills atmosphere, on May 20 and 21.

Happy 86th, Fine Arts Theatre: Enjoy 25-Cent Films at the Beverly Hills Cinema https://www.nbclosangeles.com/the-scene/happy-86th-fine-arts-theatre-enjoy-25-cent-films-at-the-beverly-hills-cinema/3130030/ 3130030 post 8065489 Fine Arts Theatre https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2023/04/fineartsdeal.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • The Fine Arts Theatre is located at 8556 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills
  • The one-screen cinema has become known as a go-to spot for independent, classic, and foreign favorites
  • To celebrate its 86th anniversary, movie prices will drop to 25 cents in honor of the theater’s 1937 opening; check the site to view the films and details

We love to swoon over super-fancy movie palaces, those dramatically decorated, fabulously festooned, often baroque wonders with vaulted ceilings and mondo buttresses and the biggest screens we’ve ever seen.

But Los Angeles is home to a host of smaller theaters that are just as impressive and fabulous as their more sizable siblings, those beautifully realized rooms that feel both intimate and elegant.

This legendary lineup of smaller spaces includes the Fine Arts Theatre, a storied Beverly Hills cinema that has been welcoming cineastes seeking a classy but cozy movie-watching experience for over eight decades.

The venue, which sits just west of La Cienega Boulevard on Wilshire Boulevard, debuted as The Regina in 1937. A remodeled followed, and a few name changes, as well as a regal return to its beautiful Art Deco appearance, complete with an eye-catching marquee.

Now the theater is marking 86 cinematic years with screenings of classic movies throughout April, films that are all rocking the oh-so-1937 admission price of 25 cents.

Do check the schedule before you go — the movies screen on select dates at specific times — and purchasing your seat ahead of time is recommended.

“That Girl From Paris” and “The Great Race” are also on the April 2023 schedule, with tickets priced at, you guessed it, 25 cents. Several other lauded films are on the roster, so be sure to peruse the full list at the theater’s site.

The month will feature some special live events as well. Karen Knotts, daughter of actor Don Knotts, will appear at the theater on April 22 in a one-woman show. The “Tied Up in Knotts!” salute looks back at the work of the comedy legend, known for “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” and several other classics.

A “cabaret”-style tribute show honoring actor Buddy Ebsen, with iconic clips and remembrances, will take place on April 30; “My Buddy, the Other Side of Oz” will feature an appearance by the actor’s daughter Kiki Ebsen (Ms. Ebsen will perform with a four-piece band, sure to be a treat in the space).

A general ticket for each live evening is $30; you can find more information on the theater’s site.

The enchanted artifacts, colorful pieces of clothing, and various mementos we see within the realm of an on-screen story can seem to possess a sort of real magic.
